Build your own storage server, for less.

This is one of those articles that not only appeals to the Small Business folks but to anyone who is looking for more storage or to even consolidate a bunch of large USB drives.

Having a dedicated RAID server serving the storage needs for a house, small business, or even a small-medium business might be just want the doctor ordered.

IT infrastructure and storage has always been part of serious conversation between IT engineers and their bosses. As always IT Engineers want to use the best of the newest technologies while their bosses want to keep every project under a tight budget. It’s always an ongoing battle, however both sides always come to some mutual agreement that benefits both sides. I have been doing IT engineering for about 10 years now and let me tell you, the argument is always starts the same way: “How much is it going to cost?” Over the years I have perfected the art of saving money for companies, however, due to the economy over the past 4 years, companies have been shrinking their budgets to save money. It has been extremely hard to justify the latest gadgets along with meeting budget constraints so I find myself looking for alternate solutions that are cost effective. Today I would like to address all of the IT Systems Engineers who have to make a decision of building infrastructures for little or no cost and in this article I will address storage solutions.

A few years ago I came across an interesting article by company called BackBlaze, (Petabytes on a budget: How to build cheap cloud storage). In this article BackBlaze describes the price relationship between building your own storage array and buying one from companies such as EMC. This particular article opened my eyes and changed my whole perspective on storage. Since 2009, many companies have came out with their own versions of unified storage systems and as you can imagine the price of services grew substantially over the years. What I wanted to do is to build a similar system, which could be brought into any small to mid size business and provide storage capabilities applied to many applications. My favorite question… “What about the price?”. Though this article I am planning to show that my system could be highly customized depending on your budget, but be warned, choosing different components based on your budget can sometimes get you in trouble.
